Target Information
Monocarboxylates such as lactate and pyruvate are essential for cellular metabolism. Lactic acid, produced during glycolysis, must be transported out of cells to maintain pH and metabolic function. This transport is mediated by monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs), which act as proton symports selective for L-lactate. The MCT family includes at least eight members (MCT1–8), each with 10–12 transmembrane domains. Defects in the SLC16A2 gene (encoding MCT8) cause monocarboxylate transporter 8 deficiency, leading to X-linked psychomotor retardation and abnormal thyroid hormone levels.
