Target Information
This gene encodes an accessory subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I), also known as NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase.
Complex I is the first multi-subunit enzyme complex of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and plays a vital role in cellular ATP production — the primary energy source for essential cellular processes.
It transfers electrons from NADH to ubiquinone through a series of redox centers, contributing to the proton gradient necessary for ATP synthesis.
Complex I consists of at least 41 subunits, with 7 encoded by the mitochondrial genome and the remainder by nuclear genes.
