Target Information
Ferritin is the major intracellular iron storage protein in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of 24 subunits of heavy and light ferritin chains.
Variation in ferritin subunit composition affects iron uptake and release rates in different tissues.
Ferritin stores iron in a soluble and non-toxic state.
Defects in the light chain ferritin gene are associated with neurodegenerative diseases and hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome.
Ferritin is a holoenzyme shell (~450 kDa) consisting of 24 subunits (H and L types), capable of storing up to 4,500 atoms of ferric iron.
