Target Information
XBP1 encodes a transcription factor that regulates MHC class II genes by binding to a promoter element referred to as an X box. This gene product is a bZIP protein, also identified as a transcription factor that binds to an enhancer in the promoter of T cell leukemia virus type 1. It may enhance viral protein expression by acting as a DNA-binding partner of a viral transactivator.
Under endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, the mRNA of this gene undergoes unconventional splicing mediated by the endonuclease IRE1, producing an active isoform XBP1(S). The unspliced form, XBP1(U), is constitutively expressed and may act as a negative regulator of XBP1(S) during ER stress recovery. A pseudogene of XBP1 has been localized to chromosome 5.
