The protein encoded by this gene is a glycoprotein belonging to the pentraxin family, characterized by a pentameric organization. Members of this family share significant sequence homology due to gene duplication. The encoded protein binds to proteins with pathological amyloid cross-beta folds, suggesting its role as a chaperone. It may also regulate chromatin degradation and binds to apoptotic cells at early stages, indicating involvement in apoptotic cell clearance in vivo.
