Target Information
The Fibrinogen gamma gene encodes the gamma component of fibrinogen, a blood-borne glycoprotein composed of three pairs of nonidentical polypeptide chains. After vascular injury, fibrinogen is cleaved by thrombin to form fibrin, the main component of blood clots. Cleavage products of fibrinogen and fibrin also regulate cell adhesion, spreading, and display vasoconstrictor and chemotactic activities, acting as mitogens for several cell types. Mutations in this gene are associated with dysfibrinogenemia, hypofibrinogenemia, and thrombophilia. Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
