ITGAV encodes the integrin alpha chain V, part of heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of alpha and beta chains. The alpha V chain undergoes post-translational cleavage to form disulfide-linked heavy and light chains, which combine with multiple beta chains (β1, β3, β5, β6, β8) to form various integrins.
Among these, the αVβ3 integrin, also known as the Vitronectin receptor (VNR), is well-studied for its role in cell adhesion and signal transduction. Integrins are essential for cell-surface mediated signaling and adhesion processes.
