Target Information
Rims1 is a member of the RAS gene superfamily that regulates synaptic vesicle exocytosis and voltage-gated calcium channels during neurotransmitter and insulin release.
Mutations in Rims1 are associated with cone-rod dystrophy type 7 and may affect cognition.
Rims1 functions as a scaffold protein regulating neurotransmitter release at the active zone and maintaining normal release probability during short-term synaptic plasticity.
It also plays a role in dendrite formation by melanocytes. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for Rims1.
Diseases associated with RIMS1 include Cone-Rod Dystrophy 7 and Retinitis Pigmentosa.
