Target Information
CD86 is one of two ligands (the other being CD80) for CTLA4 and CD28. It functions as a costimulatory molecule in eliciting T-cell help during antigen presentation. Inadequate co-stimulation involving CD86/CD80 can induce immune tolerance. CD86 is a type I membrane protein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily and is expressed by antigen-presenting cells. It binds to CD28 and CTLA4 on T cells, providing activation or inhibitory signals that regulate immune responses. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms. CD86 dysfunction has been associated with conditions such as gallbladder squamous cell carcinoma and myocarditis.
