Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily, responsible for transporting various molecules across cellular membranes. It is part of the MRP subfamily involved in multidrug resistance.
This protein functions in the cellular export of cyclic nucleotides, contributing to their degradation and elimination. It provides resistance to thiopurine anticancer drugs (6-mercaptopurine, thioguanine) and the anti-HIV drug 9-(2-phosphonylmethoxyethyl)adenine.
It may play a role in resistance to thiopurines in acute lymphoblastic leukemia and to antiretroviral nucleoside analogs in HIV-infected patients. Alternative splicing has been observed, though the full sequence and initiation site remain unclear.
