Target Information
NEK8 (NIMA-related kinase 8) is a serine/threonine kinase associated with cell cycle progression from G2 to M phase. It forms part of a ciliary protein complex essential for renal and cardiovascular development, interacting with polycystin signaling pathways to regulate ciliary protein targeting. NEK8 is required for renal tubular integrity and may influence cytoskeletal structure and ciliary biogenesis in kidney epithelial cells.
Defects in NEK8 cause nephronophthisis type 9 (NPHP9) [MIM:613824], an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by progressive tubulo-interstitial kidney disease leading to end-stage renal failure.
