Neurogenin 1은 basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) 단백질로, 발달 과정에서 세포 유형을 결정하는 전사 인자입니다. NeuroG1은 신경발생(neurogenesis)에 관여하며, 신경줄기세포가 성상세포(astrocyte)로 분화되는 것을 억제하는 역할을 합니다. 또한 CREB-binding protein 전사 복합체의 위치 조절을 통해 astrocyte 관련 유전자 발현을 억제하고, gliogenesis에 필수적인 STAT 전사 인자를 억제함으로써 신경세포 분화를 촉진합니다.
