Target Information
IL12B (IL-12 p40) encodes a subunit of interleukin 12, a cytokine acting on T and natural killer cells with broad biological activity.
Interleukin 12 is a disulfide-linked heterodimer composed of a 40 kDa subunit (IL12B) and a 35 kDa subunit (IL12A).
It is expressed by activated macrophages and is essential for Th1 cell development and maintenance of memory/effector Th1 cells.
Overexpression has been observed in the central nervous system of multiple sclerosis patients, suggesting involvement in disease pathogenesis.
Promoter polymorphisms are associated with the severity of atopic and non-atopic asthma in children.
