ECM1은 collagen, fibronectin 등 여러 세포외기질 단백질과 상호작용하며, 세포 증식, 이동, 침윤 조절에 관여합니다. 또한 연골 내 골형성, 혈관신생, 종양 생물학에도 관련되어 있습니다.
이 단백질은 피부의 항상성과 구조적 무결성을 유지하는 데 기여하며, ECM1 유전자 변이는 Lipoid Proteinosis (Urbach-Wiethe disease)와 같은 질환과 연관되어 있습니다.
