DAZL은 인간 생식세포의 유사분열 및 감수분열에 관여하는 단백질로, RNA 결합 단백질을 암호화하는 DAZL 유전자군에 속합니다. 이 단백질은 남녀의 태아 및 출생 후 생식세포에서 발현되며, 핵과 세포질에 위치합니다. 인간에서는 원시 생식세포, 성체 고환, 난소에서 발현되며, 정자 형성과정에서 중요한 역할을 합니다.
DAZL 유전자 결함은 심한 희소정자증(oligozoospermia) 및 비폐쇄성 무정자증(azoospermia)을 유발할 수 있습니다. DAZ 유전자군의 진화적 전위와 증폭은 영장류의 Y 염색체상 DAZ 유전자 클러스터의 형성을 초래했습니다.
