Target Information

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It causes membrane hyperpolarization through Cl⁻ channel opening associated with the GABA-A receptor (GABA-A R) subtype.
GABA-A Rs are therapeutic targets for sedative, anxiolytic, and hypnotic agents and are implicated in disorders such as epilepsy, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
The GABA-A R is a multimeric complex composed of multiple subunits (six alpha, four beta, and four gamma variants). Expression of alpha and beta subunits yields functional GABA-A Rs, but coexpression with gamma subunit is required for benzodiazepine modulation.
Phosphorylation of beta subunits modulates receptor function, and different alpha subunits may mediate distinct benzodiazepine effects.
