Target Information
Myocyte enhancer factor-2 (MEF-2) family of transcription factors associates with co-repressors or co-activators to regulate development and function of T cells, neuronal cells, and muscle cells.
Four family members arise from alternatively spliced transcripts — MEF-2A, MEF-2B, MEF-2C, and MEF-2D — which bind as homo- or heterodimers to the MEF-2 site in gene promoters.
Differential expression of these transcripts suggests functional distinctions during embryogenesis and development. MEF2 factors are key regulators in muscle gene expression during differentiation from mesodermal precursors to myoblasts.
