Target Information

Voltage-dependent calcium channels mediate calcium ion entry into excitable cells and are involved in multiple calcium-dependent processes such as muscle contraction, hormone or neurotransmitter release, and gene expression. These channels consist of alpha-1, beta, alpha-2/delta, and gamma subunits. The alpha-1 subunit forms the pore and determines channel activity, while other subunits modulate this activity.
The CACNA1A gene encodes the alpha-1A subunit, predominantly expressed in neuronal tissue. Mutations are associated with familial hemiplegic migraine and episodic ataxia 2. Polymorphic variations due to n-repeats exist, with certain variants linked to spinocerebellar ataxia 6 when the polyglutamine tract is expanded.
