Target Information
This gene encodes one of two high-affinity receptors for melatonin, the primary hormone secreted by the pineal gland. It is a G-protein coupled, 7-transmembrane receptor responsible for melatonin’s effects on mammalian circadian rhythm and reproductive alterations affected by day length. The receptor is an integral membrane protein localized to specific brain regions, including the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (circadian rhythm) and the hypophysial pars tuberalis (reproductive effects).
