Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the fatty acid desaturase (FADS) gene family. Desaturase enzymes regulate unsaturation of fatty acids by introducing double bonds between specific carbons of the fatty acyl chain. FADS family members contain an N-terminal cytochrome b5-like domain and a C-terminal desaturase region, both characterized by conserved histidine motifs. This gene is clustered with FADS1 and FADS3 at 11q12–q13.1, likely arising from gene duplication events due to similar exon/intron organization.
