Neurogenin-2는 기본 helix-loop-helix (bHLH) 전사 인자 유전자군의 일원으로, 이동성 신경능선 세포로부터의 신경발생(neurogenesis)에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
마우스 신경발생 과정에서 Ngn2와 Ngn1은 중추 및 말초 신경계의 서로 다른 전구 세포 집단에서 발현됩니다.
돌연변이 분석 결과 Ngn1은 근위부 두개 감각 신경절의 신경 전구체 결정에 필요하며, Ngn2는 epibranchial placode 유래 감각 뉴런 전구체 결정에 필수적임이 밝혀졌습니다.
