Target Information
IL12B (IL-12 p40) encodes a subunit of interleukin 12, a cytokine that acts on T and natural killer cells and exhibits diverse biological activities. Interleukin 12 is a disulfide-linked heterodimer composed of a 40 kDa receptor-like subunit encoded by IL12B and a 35 kDa subunit encoded by IL12A. It is expressed by activated macrophages, playing a crucial role in Th1 cell development and maintaining memory/effector Th1 cells for long-term protection against intracellular pathogens. Overexpression has been observed in the CNS of multiple sclerosis patients, suggesting involvement in disease pathogenesis. Promoter polymorphisms are associated with asthma severity in children.
