Cystatin C는 type 2 cystatin superfamily에 속하는 강력한 cysteine proteinase 억제제입니다. 내인성(lysosomal cathepsins) 및 병원성 효소를 모두 억제하며, 13 kDa의 분비 단백질로 생체액 내 고농도로 존재합니다. 모든 인간 핵세포에서 발현되는 것으로 알려져 있으며, 심혈관 질환(죽상동맥경화증, 아밀로이드 혈관병증, 심근경색 등)과 관련된 변화가 보고되었습니다. 낮은 분자량으로 인해 신부전의 바이오마커로도 활용됩니다.
