Target Information
Ribosomes, the organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins.
The RPL8 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is part of the 60S subunit and belongs to the L2P family. It is located in the cytoplasm and associates with 5.8S rRNA. The protein is involved in aminoacyl-tRNA binding and is a component of the elongation factor 2-binding site at the ribosomal subunit interface.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein exist, and multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
