Target Information

The import of proteins into the nucleus involves two steps:

  1. Energy-independent docking of the protein to the nuclear envelope.
  2. Energy-dependent translocation through the nuclear pore complex.

Imported proteins require a nuclear localization sequence (NLS), generally composed of short regions of basic amino acids. Proteins involved in the first step include importin and its yeast homolog SRP1, which bind to the NLS.

KPNA2 interacts with NLSs of DNA helicase Q1 and SV40 T antigen, potentially participating in nuclear protein transport and VJ recombination.
