Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFP proteins, vimentin is expressed with desmin during early cellular development and is later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin also participates in steroid synthesis by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase induces filament breakdown and cytoskeletal rearrangements that facilitate cholesterol transport to mitochondria, enhancing steroid biosynthesis.
