Target Information

alpha-Internexin is a Class IV intermediate filament subunit expressed very early in neuronal development. It is related to but distinct from the neurofilament triplet proteins NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H, sharing similar sequence motifs and intron organization.

Many mature neurons contain alpha-Internexin in addition to NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H, while in some neurons it is the only neurofilament subunit expressed. Antibodies to Internexin serve as unique probes for studying and classifying neuronal types and tracing their processes in tissue sections and cultures.

Due to its early developmental expression, alpha-Internexin is a convenient diagnostic marker for neuronal progenitor cells and cells committed to the neuronal lineage. Although its use in brain tumor studies has not yet been examined, it may hold potential interest in that field.
