BAF53A는 actin-related proteins (ARPs) 계열에 속하며, conventional actin과 유사한 아미노산 서열을 공유합니다.
ARPs는 ATP 결합 부위를 포함한 actin fold를 가지며, 소포 수송, 방추체 정렬, 핵 이동, 염색질 재구성 등의 세포 과정에 관여합니다.
BAF53A는 포유류의 BAF (BRG1/brm-associated factor) 복합체의 53 kDa 서브유닛 단백질을 암호화하며, 이는 효모 및 초파리의 SWI/SNF 복합체와 기능적으로 유사합니다.
이 단백질은 β-actin과 함께 BRG1의 ATPase 활성을 극대화하고, BAF 복합체의 염색질 결합에 필수적입니다.
세 가지 전사 변이체가 보고되어 있으며, 두 가지 단백질 아이소폼을 생성합니다.
