Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into an active 17 kDa protein through inflammasome activation.
IL-1β lacks a signal sequence peptide for the classical ER/Golgi pathway and is secreted via an alternate mechanism alongside caspase-1. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors and is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA).
IL-1β plays a crucial role in innate host defense by inducing proinflammatory cytokines and acute-phase responses. Elevated IL-1β levels are associated with chronic inflammatory conditions, highlighting the potential therapeutic value of IL-1β neutralizing antibodies.
