Target Information
Mitochondrial peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor (PBR) is an essential component of the steroidogenic machinery, mediating cholesterol transport to the inner mitochondrial membrane upon ligand activation. PBR consists of three subunits: an isoquinoline binding site, a voltage-dependent anion channel, and an adenine nucleotide carrier. It is evolutionarily conserved from bacteria to humans and is widely expressed in peripheral organs, while in the brain it is mainly localized in glial cells. Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) inhibits Leydig cell steroidogenesis by affecting PBR mRNA stability, leading to reduced PBR expression and cholesterol transport. PRAX-1 (peripheral benzodiazepine receptor-associated protein 1) specifically interacts with PBR.
