Target Information
TOP2B (DNA Topoisomerase II Beta) is a protein coding gene that encodes a DNA topoisomerase enzyme controlling and altering DNA topology during transcription. This nuclear enzyme is involved in chromosome condensation, chromatid separation, and relief of torsional stress during DNA transcription and replication. It catalyzes transient breaking and rejoining of duplex DNA strands, allowing strand passage and topology alteration.
Two forms of this enzyme exist due to gene duplication: the beta form (chromosome 3) and the alpha form (chromosome 17). TOP2B is a target for several anticancer agents, and mutations in this gene are linked to drug resistance. Reduced enzyme activity may contribute to ataxia-telangiectasia. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
