Cathepsin L은 세포 내 단백질 분해에 중요한 역할을 하는 리소좀 시스테인 단백질분해효소입니다. 주요 기질로는 콜라겐, 엘라스틴, α-1 프로테아제 억제제가 있으며, 근육병증 및 심근 허혈 시 근원섬유 괴사, 단백뇨에 대한 신세뇨관 반응 등 다양한 병리학적 과정에 관여합니다.
이 단백질은 peptidase C1 패밀리에 속하며, 단일 전구체 단백질로부터 생성된 이황화 결합된 중쇄 및 경쇄의 이합체 형태로 존재합니다. 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 최소 두 가지 전사 변이체가 보고되어 있습니다.
