Target Information

This gene belongs to the septin family of nucleotide-binding proteins, originally described in yeast as cell division cycle regulatory proteins. Septins are conserved across species such as yeast, Drosophila, and mouse, and are involved in cytoskeletal organization. Disruption of septin function can disturb cytokinesis, leading to multinucleate or polyploid cells.

The SEPT5 gene is located on chromosome 22q11, a region often deleted in DiGeorge and velocardiofacial syndromes. Translocations involving SEPT5 and the MLL gene have been observed in acute myeloid leukemia. Two major transcripts (2.2 kb and 3.5 kb) are known, differing by polyadenylation site usage. An alternatively spliced variant with a different 5′ end has also been identified, though its full-length sequence is not fully characterized.
