The monoclonal antibody C9.1 reacts with mouse CD244.1, a receptor expressed on NK cells, γδ T cells, some CD8⁺ T cells, basophils, and monocytes in most inbred mouse strains (except C57BL/6 and C58, which express CD244.2).
CD244 belongs to the SLAM family and exists as two isoforms with opposing functions. It associates with CD48, regulating NK cell proliferation, cytotoxicity, and cytokine production. The CD244/CD28 interaction can inhibit NK cytotoxicity, contributing to self-tolerance. Depending on SAP levels, CD244 may enhance or inhibit CD8⁺ T cell effector functions.

The C9.1 antibody has reported antagonist activity on activated NK cells.

Target Information

This gene encodes a cell surface receptor expressed on NK cells and some T cells that mediate non-MHC restricted killing. Interaction between NK and target cells via this receptor modulates NK cytolytic activity. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
