Target Information

REST (RE1-Silencing Transcription factor, also known as NRSF) is a transcriptional repressor that binds to neuron-restrictive silencer elements (NRSE) and represses neuronal gene transcription in non-neuronal cells. It restricts neuronal gene expression by associating with corepressors such as mSin3 and CoREST, which recruit histone deacetylases to REST-regulated gene promoters. REST mediates repression by recruiting the BHC complex at RE1/NRSE sites, leading to histone deacetylation and demethylation, thereby modifying chromatin structure.
