Target Information

Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class forms the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. The taxon-specific class, also called phylogenetically-restricted crystallins, includes CRYZ, which has NADPH-dependent quinone reductase activity distinct from other known quinone reductases. It lacks alcohol dehydrogenase activity but is considered part of the zinc-containing alcohol dehydrogenase family. In humans, lens expression is low. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified, and one pseudogene exists.
