Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) family. Members of this family are mitogenic factors for mesenchymal-origin cells and share a conserved motif of eight cysteines.
PDGF-B can form homodimers (PDGF-BB) or heterodimers (PDGF-AB) with PDGF-A, linked by disulfide bonds. Mutations are associated with meningioma, and translocations between chromosomes 22 and 7 involving this gene and COL1A1 are linked to dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans.
Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
