Akirin1과 Akirin2 단백질은 고도로 보존된 핵 내 단백질로, NF-kappa-B 의존적 유전자 전사 조절에 중요한 역할을 합니다. 이들은 면역 결핍 및 NF-kappa-B 경로에서 그람음성 세균에 대한 방어에 필수적입니다.
Akirin1은 생쥐에서 필수적이지 않으며, 결손 생쥐에서도 뚜렷한 표현형이 나타나지 않습니다. 반면 Akirin2는 생쥐 발생에 필요하며, 두 Akirin 유전자의 결손은 TLR, TNF-α, IL-1β 신호 하류에서 IL-6 생성에 영향을 미칩니다.
Drosophila의 단일 Akirin 유전자와 기능적으로 유사하며, 초파리의 동형접합 Akirin 결손체는 배아 초기 단계에서 치명적입니다.
