Target Information
Sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs) are transcription factors belonging to the basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper family. Three isoforms (SREBP-1a, SREBP-1c, and SREBP-2) have been identified in mammals, differing in structure and function.
SREBP-1a and SREBP-1c are products of alternative promoter usage of the SREBP-1 gene, while SREBP-2 is encoded by a separate gene.
Inactive precursors (~120 kDa) reside in the ER membrane and are cleaved upon activation to yield a mature, transcriptionally active 60–78 kDa form.
SREBPs regulate lipid and cholesterol metabolism by inducing genes involved in these processes. SREBP-1 primarily influences triglyceride synthesis, whereas SREBP-2 is more closely associated with cholesterol synthesis.
