Target Information

UCP4 is a 323 amino acid mitochondrial uncoupling protein belonging to the large mitochondrial substrate carrier family with three Solcar repeats.
It functions as a mitochondrial transport carrier that facilitates the transfer of anions from the inner to the outer mitochondrial membrane and the return transfer of protons from the outer to the inner membrane.
This process reduces mitochondrial membrane potential and contributes to thermoregulatory heat production by creating proton leaks across the inner mitochondrial membrane, uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis.
UCP4 is primarily expressed in adult and fetal brain, with low levels in spinal cord, corpus callosum, and substantia nigra.
