Target Information
Protects DNA from oxidative damage by sequestering intracellular Fe(2+) ions and storing them as Fe(3+) oxyhydroxide mineral. One hydrogen peroxide oxidizes two Fe(2+) ions, preventing hydroxyl radical production via the Fenton reaction. It protects DNA from hydroxyl radical-mediated cleavage, binds DNA without sequence specificity, and does not promote condensation or self-aggregation. It cannot protect DNA from DNase-mediated cleavage.
