Background
This gene encodes a cell surface tyrosine kinase receptor for members of the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) family, which are mitogens for cells of mesenchymal origin. The specific ligand bound determines whether the receptor forms a homodimer or heterodimer with PDGFR-α or PDGFR-β subunits. The gene is located on chromosome 5, near genes for GM-CSF and M-CSF receptor, and may be implicated in 5q syndrome. A translocation between chromosomes 5 and 12, fusing this gene with ETV6, is associated with chronic myeloproliferative disorder with eosinophilia (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
