Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA component. The MRPS7 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that plays an essential role in organizing the 3′ domain of the 16S rRNA near the P- and A-sites. Sequence and biochemical variations among species make homologous identification difficult.
