Background
This gene belongs to the subfamily of ubiquitously expressed heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs). The hnRNPs are RNA-binding proteins that complex with heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA). These proteins are associated with pre-mRNAs in the nucleus and influence pre-mRNA processing and mRNA metabolism and transport.
While all hnRNPs are present in the nucleus, some shuttle between the nucleus and cytoplasm. The hnRNP M protein has three quasi-RRM domains that bind to RNAs and also functions as a monomer of the N-acetylglucosamine-specific receptor, postulated to trigger selective recycling of immature GlcNAc-bearing thyroglobulin molecules. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
