Background

Activating transcription factor 1 (ATF1) is a member of the ATF subfamily and the bZIP (basic-region leucine zipper) family. It regulates downstream target gene expression involved in cell growth, survival, and other physiological processes.
ATF1 is phosphorylated at serine 63 by several kinases, including cAMP-dependent protein kinase A, calmodulin-dependent protein kinase I/II, mitogen- and stress-activated protein kinase, and cyclin-dependent kinase 3 (cdk-3).
Phosphorylation enhances its transactivation and transcriptional activities, promoting cell transformation.
Chromosomal translocations involving ATF1 and FUS (chromosome 16) or EWSR1 (chromosome 22) produce chimeric proteins implicated in angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma and clear cell sarcoma.
This gene also has a pseudogene on another chromosome.
