Background

The protein encoded by this gene is a multifunctional nuclear phosphoprotein involved in cell cycle progression, apoptosis, and cellular transformation. It functions as a transcription factor regulating specific target genes. Mutations, overexpression, rearrangement, and translocation of this gene are associated with various hematopoietic tumors, leukemias, and lymphomas, including Burkitt lymphoma. Alternative translation initiation from upstream non-AUG (CUG) and downstream AUG sites produces two isoforms with distinct N-termini. The non-AUG initiated form is suppressed in Burkitt’s lymphomas, indicating its functional importance.
