Background
There are approximately 40 known eukaryotic LIM proteins, named for their LIM domains. LIM domains are conserved cysteine-rich structures containing two zinc fingers, typically mediating protein-protein interactions. LIM kinase-1 and LIM kinase-2 form a subfamily with two N-terminal LIM motifs and a C-terminal kinase domain. LIMK2 is phosphorylated and activated by ROCK, a downstream effector of Rho, and subsequently phosphorylates cofilin, inhibiting actin depolymerization. This pathway contributes to Rho-induced actin cytoskeleton reorganization. At least three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
