Background
Laminins are extracellular matrix glycoproteins that are major non-collagenous components of basement membranes. They play roles in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Many of laminin’s effects are mediated through cell surface receptors, including integrins and non-integrin laminin-binding proteins.
This gene encodes a high-affinity, non-integrin family laminin receptor 1, also known as 67 kDa laminin receptor, 37 kDa laminin receptor precursor (37LRP), or p40 ribosome-associated protein. The amino acid sequence of laminin receptor 1 is highly conserved through evolution, indicating a key biological function. Elevated expression levels of the laminin receptor transcript have been observed in various contexts.
