Background

Laminins are extracellular matrix glycoproteins and major non-collagenous components of basement membranes. They play roles in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminins consist of three non-identical chains—alpha, beta, and gamma—forming a cruciform structure with three short arms and one long arm. Each chain is encoded by a distinct gene, and multiple isoforms exist. Different combinations of alpha, beta, and gamma chains form heterotrimeric laminin isoforms, designated by Arabic numerals according to their discovery (e.g., α1β1γ1 = laminin 1).
