Contactin 2 (CNTN2, also known as transiently-expressed axonal glycoprotein, AXT, TAX, TAX1, TAG-1, axonin 1)
Contactin 2 is a neuronal cell adhesion molecule (CAM) that influences axon connection formation during nervous system development. It belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF) and contains a GPI-anchor, six Ig-like, and four Fibronectin type III (FNIII)-like domains.
Expressed predominantly during neural development on axonal membranes, it guides commissural axons without promoting growth.
Contactin 2 binds with NgCAM in the same membrane (cis-binding). Heterophilic binding (Contactin 2/NgCAM and Contactin 2/NrCAM) occurs in the first four Ig domains, while homophilic binding (Contactin 2/Contactin 2) occurs in the FNIII domain.
